From 3 hours of calendar chaos to 'It just works' — My Claude Code story

This article is based on a lightning talk I gave at the Claude Code Community Meetup Munich on January 26, 2026. You can download the slides here.

Every sports parent knows this problem

My daughter has been playing hockey at the Münchner Sport Club since she was four. And every parent with kids in organized sports knows the drill: PDFs via WhatsApp, Excel spreadsheets by email, last-minute changes in the parents' group chat.

My personal rule: If it's not in the calendar, it doesn't happen.

Because when your kid isn't at the hockey pitch on time, the coaches get angry. So you need to organize your life around the schedule. And every season, I spend 2-3 hours manually typing every single game and practice into our family calendar. So everyone knows. So nothing falls through the cracks.

Boring? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.

The ChatGPT attempt (spoiler: it didn't work)

When ChatGPT came along, I thought: this must be automatable!

So I asked ChatGPT for instructions. Got code snippets. Had to copy and paste. ASCII encoding errors. Opened the editor. Saved as rich text format. Error messages. Tried again. More error messages.

After what felt like a hundred attempts, I got it to work — sort of. But honestly? It wasn't much faster than doing it manually.

I figured maybe others have this problem too. So I tried to build a small SaaS app. It's sitting unused on GitHub now. ChatGPT didn't understand the context I gave it. The generated calendar files were broken. Project: abandoned.

Then came Claude Code

Last week, Anthropic published Claude Code as a desktop experience — essentially Claude Code for the rest of us. It sits right in the app, works on your Mac, and it's incredibly powerful because it can actually access your files, work with your browser, and fill in forms.

I gave Claude an Excel file with the season's game schedule.

What happened next blew me away.

Claude thinks ahead

The spreadsheet had two teams: MSC1 and MSC2. For one game, both had the same location listed.

Claude asked: "These two teams share the same location — are they playing each other? All the other teams have different addresses..."

I hadn't even thought about that. But Claude was right.

Claude spots conflicts

Some games had overlapping times. Claude flagged it: "There are two games scheduled at the same time. That can't be right — how should I handle this?"

I explained: there's a first team and a second team, and they can actually play at the same time.

Claude: Got it. And it nailed it on the first try.

The key takeaway

Chatbots tell you what to do. Claude Code does it for you.

That's the fundamental difference. ChatGPT gave me instructions that I had to execute myself — with all the errors and frustrations. Claude Code took my files, understood the context, asked smart questions, and delivered the result.

The AI works for me. Not the other way around.

What this means for you

If you have similar "boring" tasks that should be automatable but never were:

  1. Try Claude Code — it works directly with your files
  2. Give it real data — Excel, PDFs, whatever you have
  3. Let it surprise you — Claude asks when something is unclear

For me, it solved a years-long problem in a single session.
